Silver Britannia Design and Coin Highlights
The Royal Mint's Silver Britannia was introduced in 1997. Originally, the coin was struck from .958 fine silver. In 2013, the mint changed the purity to .999 fine, matching the other silver bullion coins on the market. As a result, the mass (gross weight) was reduced to 31.21 grams and the diameter was reduced to 38.61 mm.
The coin's obverse side shows Lady Britannia, the female embodiment of liberty and the British nation. She is essentially Great Britain's version of Lady Liberty. The design was created by artist Philip Nathan. Britannia is shown holding a shield branded with the Union Jack as well as a trident. This symbolizes Britain's naval supremacy during the height of the British Empire. Rim inscriptions indicate the coin's weight, purity, and the year it was issued.
Since 2015, the reverse side of the coin bears the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. The eye-catching background pattern on the field of the coin also serves as an elegant anti-counterfeiting measure, making Silver Britannia coins nearly impossible to fake. In addition to the queen's name and the legal tender denomination of "2 POUNDS," other inscriptions along the outer rim indicate the queen's traditional regnal titles: "D. G. REG. F. D." The Latin translation for these abbreviations is, "By the grace of God, the queen, defender of the faith."
